Clocktower (461 2nd at Second Street)

The Clock Tower, once home to San Francisco' Schmidt Lithography Company, has been converted into 127 live/work spaces in the heart of the South of Market Historical District. The original brick-and-timber plant was built by Max Schmidt in 1907 and expanded to include a six-story concrete building. On the site where artists and printers once produced classic California Fruit Box labels and posters for the Panama Pacific International Exposition, a new generation of entrepreneurs and loft lovers can now live and work. A San Francisco Landmark, the Clock Tower features a lush landscaped central courtyard and four floors of deeded parking. The average loft size is over 1200 square feet, with lofts ranging between 600 and 4000 square feet. All units feature completed kitchens and bathrooms. Two elevators and a dramatic stairway lead to the light-filled lofts. The building's interior and many of the individual units feature brick walls and timber columns, reminiscent of lofts in Paris and New York. Others offer powerful concrete columns and sweeping expanses. The ceilings are 12 to 20 feet in height, and in many units, timber beams crisscross high above. Sunlight pours into lofts through large industrial windows, skylights and light courts, Many lofts feature exciting bay, city and bridge views.

Embarcadero Lofts

Embarcadero Lofts (300 Beale at Folsom)

Frederick H. Meyer, founder of the California College of Arts and Crafts, designed this Moderne commercial building. The original four-story, concrete and stucco building was completed in 1937 and a five-story addition at the rear was added in 1944. The building was originally used by the Coffin-Redington Drug Company for offices, laboratories, manufacturing, warehousing and shipping. It was converted into 53 "luxurious" lofts in 1997. One of the many other commercial buildings and residences designed by Mr. Meyer is the Cadillac Hotel, San Francisco Landmark 176.

Designed by the award winning architectural firm Siegel & Strain, each unit takes advantage of expansive city views and the unique interior spaces of the original brewery. By the 1880's San Francisco was a bustling port with at the Oriental Warehouse playing a central role as the primary distribution point for imports of coffee, tea rice, and silk from the Orient. South Park was created in 1854 by Englishman, George Gordon in an attempt to recreate a London residential block. For several years it was a very stylish address, inhabited by many transplanted southerners. South Park runs parallel to, and takes its name from, the park located south of the prevailing center of town. The South Park lofts have a stucco exterior reminiscent of the South West, although the developer has dubbed them Contemporary Mediterranean. This is a ground up (built from the ground up) project in the heart of the South Park. The architecture for the project was done by Ramon Zambrano. The lofts feature 16 foot ceilings, park, courtyard and City Views, deeded parking and storage for each unit. The building was built in March of 1993 with square footage running from 930 square feet to 1195 square feet.
